I was sooo excited the other day when a representative for Leslie Segrete came across Finding Fabulous, contacted me and asked if I’d like to interview Leslie in a post about decorating outdoor spaces.

What?  Are we talking about THE Leslie Segrete…designer from HGTV’s Trading Spaces & While Your Were Out?  Here on Finding Fabulous…YES!

And so without further delay…The fabulous Leslie Segrete is in the house!

Here’s our interview…

J. My blog is all about Finding Fabulous…for less! Do you have any money saving tricks up your sleeve for decorating outdoor spaces on a budget?

LS: Outdoor lighting is a wonderful way to brighten up your outdoor space so you can enjoy it day and night. The best part is, it doesn’t have to cost you a bundle; choices can range from simple twinkling lights for about $4 a strand or decorative lantern string lights for around $10 to low voltage landscape lighting for under $80.

If you’re entertaining, something as simple as multi-color paper lanterns with string lights can spruce up your outdoor area dining area when draped under your umbrella or pergola. We even have simple white twinkle lights wrapped around a wrought iron trellis for a festive feature in our yard all year long.

A fire pit is a fun and comforting focal piece to add to your outdoor living space – and best of all… it won’t break the bank! A fire pit can create a central point for a seating area perfect for after sunset conversation and the occasional ghost story. Plus, a fire pit is great for one of the classic summer activity of roasting marshmallows and making S’mores.

Finally, a barefoot and weather-friendly outdoor rug can add a sophisticated yet comfortable look to make your deck or patio more unique. An outdoor rug can also help to create a seating or dining area in an open yard if you don’t have a deck or patio. If you stick to a rug with neutral colors you can add color by accessorizing your outdoor space with vibrant flowers and landscaping. For a more festive feel add a burst of color on the floor with a vibrant and bold patterned rug option.

J.  What are some of your favorite design elements when decorating an outdoor space?

LS: It’s super important to play off of the natural settings of your outdoor space. Design around a stand out tree, favorite garden spot, or even architectural feature like a trellis, arbor, or pergola. By using a special spot in your backyard you can instantly set the tone for what that space is going to feel. Then, depending on your budget, your outdoor space can be simple, with a natural paver patio, a table for dining or a seating area depending on how you like to use the space, and of course a grill for relaxed outdoor dining. Or, build your dream outdoor space with a fully functional outdoor kitchen. Imagine a great cooking and prep area from natural stone complete with a sink and a refrigerator for a truly gourmet experience. Go for all weather materials and choose some great outdoor seating. Build a pergola for shade and a base for climbing plants to wander and of course add landscape lighting. Be sure to highlight your favorite tree and add down lighting for a soft moonlit glow.

J.  If you have a little bit of money to spend, what outdoor decorating updates would you recommend for summer?

LS:  The most important product for your outdoor space is all weather outdoor furnishings that suite the way you use the space. If you enjoy dining out of doors cover a table and chairs with an umbrella. If you’re a loungy conversational type, consider comfy chairs or group two love seats with some tables. Either way your outdoor space is an extension of your home and should be a place to relax. Outdoor furniture has come a long way; treat yourself to comfortable seating with plush cushions. The best part is that it is actually affordable. Then when your budget allows, layer on the decorative items that really show your true personality.

J.  If you could buy one item to update an existing outdoor living space…what would it be?

LS:  If you have some money to spend and you’re looking to replace that old grill of yours, a grill in a fun new color is a great addition to your deck or patio. I love to entertain and host large barbeques, so a grill with a large cooking surface is important to me. Kenmore has some really great options for grills. I love the Kenmore red grill available at Sears and Kmart because not only can it cook up to 40 burgers at a time but it also adds a splash of vibrant color to your outdoor space – sure to impress any summer guest!

However you choose to spend your summer décor budget make choices that are going to last year after year to maximize your spending, so go for that grill or perennials that will stay with you for summers to come.

J.  Which design style do you gravitate towards when decorating outdoor spaces?

LS:  I really love to let my natural settings inspire me. It really depends on what the surroundings are for how I decorate the space. If its poolside I think of more clean lines all weather resin wicker seating with comfy clay toned or white cushions. If it a shade fern lined garden I think of a nice table setting for intimate dinners outside. Of course lighting is super important. Some spaces beg for Moroccan lanterns while others just sparkle with white Christmas lights.

J.  Many people decorate the insides of their homes, but forget about their decks and porches. What advice would you give these people?

LS:  Get outside summer is almost over! You don’t have to spend a ton just get some adorable and functional furnishing that are made for outside and use that space. If you are lucky enough to have any outdoor space it would be a shame not to take advantage of it. I think most home owners are afraid they have to make their outdoor space this extravagant setting, where in reality it can be simple with a couple chairs and a lovely little table. Just make sure you add some of your interior design flair with accessories like pillows, lighting, and even wall décor with pieces that are made for the outdoors.

J.  What inspires you most when decorating your outdoor living space?

LS:  Nature, whether is a tree or the city skyline.

J.  Where do you like to shop for fabulous outdoor furniture and accessories…without breakin’ the bank?

LS:  I love finding affordable options at stores like Sears and Kmart. They have great home and outdoor décor from the Country Living and Jaclyn Smith lines that are made to stand up to outdoor elements and are well priced and have a very high end look. A couple years ago, bought expensive outdoor furniture and ended up getting rid of it a few years later. It was destroyed because it didn’t hold up to the weather.

J.  Finding Fabulous Readers love Revamping and Repurposing things! Have you repurposed anything recently for your home or outdoor living spaces?

LS:  I had an old armoire that I loved but had no use for it inside my house. I put it outside and made it a little storage unit for all my planted pots and gardening tools and supplies. It looks so lovely sitting outside in our backyard and it just gets better looking the more weathered and patinad it gets.

J.  What are your favorite color choices right now in outdoor design?

LS:  As of now, I think neutrals with brighter accents are the way to go. I would do a softer color for the outdoor seating such as a beige or warm khaki and spruce it up with bright red pillows or use an old tapestry as a table cloth that has an antique feel of washed out colors. You can always choose chair seat covers in a fabulous bright print and have a simpler off white table cloth. It is all about mixing and matching!

J.   Can you give us the scoop on popular design trends you’re seeing right now in outdoor living spaces?

LS:  Container gardening is always big. You can mix a blend of earthy glazed ceramics in deep watery tones with modern zinc planters for a modern yet eclectic feel. Be sure to fill them with a mix of local annuals at a variety of height and be sure to see to allow some to overflow from the top.

Using all weather fabrics to create curtain panels on a porch is lovely. You can play it safe with a solid or go bold with a fun and large scale pattern.

Working on a First Draft – First Fire Your …http://bathroom-home-improvement.bompus.com/2010/07/working-on-a-first-draft-first-fire-your/ http://bathroom-home-improvement.bompus.com/2010/07/working-on-a-first-draft-first-fire-your/#comments Thu, 29 Jul 2010 20:57:58 +0000 james http://bathroom-home-improvement.bompus.com/2010/07/working-on-a-first-draft-first-fire-your/ Before word one of a first draft ever reaches the page, ideally one thing must happen: the writer must fire all their distractions. There will be plenty of moments along the way for introspection and hindsight, but this is not the time. Do right by the project and do it early on by recognizing there will be inevitable, unplanned diversions that might cause delays, sometimes permanent ones. Have a plan of attack before you begin.

Granted, some situations will always remain outside the writer’s control. Illness, a plumbing emergency, or the neighbors launching bottle rockets off the roof, will all likely impact a writing session. None of these events are really distractions, though. They are called life.

Acceptance is the answer to most situations of this type. Let them go rather than fighting them and with the possible exception of the plumbing emergency, they will generally work themselves out.

True distractions require a different approach and take more than just letting go. Distractions can be avoided, lessened or even eliminated. This is possible because the writer usually creates their own distractions. Let me repeat that. The writer is the single biggest manufacturer of predicaments that obstruct their own writing. They are grand masters of drama.

If writing is like setting sail on the ocean, the writer is not a good captain when distracted. No, the writer is playing the part of the Kraken, the beast who gnarls his octopus like legs around the ship, threatening to pull the whole works into the sea forever.

Minimizing distractions can take some preemptive action. For instance: scheduling automatic payment of bills (even ones not due for many weeks or months). Where applicable, load up on cat food, cat treats and litter (or dog/fish/ferret/lion goodies as the case may be). Just because Daddy has a book to write, doesn’t change the fact that the Cat Army has needs.

If a home improvement project can wait a few months, consider tabling it. Dealing with contractors hefting sheetrock and pneumatic drills up the stairs will severely curtail your attention span. For the same reason, avoid adopting a new pet until the first draft (no matter how primitive) is done. While pets love nibbling freshly edited pages, wait until you actually have something of consequence for them to chew. Mistah Kitteh will thank you. So will your editor.

And there are some minor office organization techniques that can help later on. It sounds silly, but deal with every piece of paper in sight from your seat at the typewriter or computer. If a letter wasted away beside the keyboard, unread for months, perhaps it wants to visit the shredder more than it wants to be ignored yet again.

Writing furniture should be comfortable, so if the chair or desk causes pain when seated for periods of longer than 90 minutes, a new one might save a few trips to the chiropractor. Make the workspace as functional as possible by reducing the clutter and keeping it clean—throughout the project.

Last, write an email to your innermost circle of friends. This missive is not an announcement of your plans to write a novel. No, it’s an admission of guilt and contrition, because you will be neglecting them—for quite awhile. Instead of groveling for forgiveness after the fact, why not do it in advance instead of when your mind is a million miles away with your characters? Then when friends do eventually complain about your absence (emotional, physical or otherwise), just hit send.

And then get back to the writing!

Future outlook

Growth in retail sector, liberalization, growing middle class and rising purchases of packaged foods and goods, growing application of polyester film in various applications such as electrical cables and motor insulators and lamination for automobiles and building glass windows is expected to fuel growth of polyester films. In International market, it is expected at 4-6% per annum. Local market growth is estimated at the rate of 10-14% per annum. The growth in domestic market is expected to be higher due to boom in retail outlets. The Company has successfully faced the competition and been able to tap additional business in speciality film in China, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria and Yemen.

The Company is penetrating into untapped markets in Eastern Europe such as Czechoslovakia, Croatia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. Financial Performance

The company reported encouraging results for the quarter ended June 2010. Top Tools For Home Remodelinghttp://bathroom-home-improvement.bompus.com/2010/07/top-tools-for-home-remodeling/ http://bathroom-home-improvement.bompus.com/2010/07/top-tools-for-home-remodeling/#comments Thu, 29 Jul 2010 15:05:45 +0000 james http://bathroom-home-improvement.bompus.com/2010/07/top-tools-for-home-remodeling/ For anyone new to home remodeling, the tool buying experience can be a bit overwhelming. When buying tools, it is best to stick to hardware stores or any large marts, and don’t be afraid to ask a salesperson for help. A good salesperson can help you make your decision by explaining what tools are needed for the job.

There is a wide range of tools to choose from but here is my recommend list of tools for home improvement.

Variable speed reversible drill: This tool comes in either plug-in or cordless. Uses blades that are called bits to drive in or take out screws, drill holes, sand wood, and many other tasks.

Claw Hammer: I recommend getting a 16-ounce hammer that has a fiberglass handle to soften the blow to your hand.

Pliers: Pliers have toothed jaws that enable you to grip various sized objects. For example gripping onto a water pipe, the top of a gas cap or fishing out a tape measure you dropped into the toilet. Most pliers are adjustable allowing for a better grip.

Small Saw: A small easy to use handsaw is handy to have for cutting material such as paneling or shelving.

Various size screwdrivers: You will need to have a verity of sizes in both flat head and Phillips screwdrivers.

Utility Knife: A good strong utility knife with replaceable blades comes in handy for cutting cardboard and making precise cuts.

Staple Gun: A staple gun is good for securing things such as, ceiling tile, plastic sheeting and fabrics.

Level: A good level will contain 3 glass tubes with air bubbles for precise leveling.

Metal file: This tool is good for filing down rough edges, sharpening the edges of scrapers, putty knife and many other objects.

Allen wrench: These wrenches are often sold in sets of various sizes. They are L shaped and designed for bolts that have hexagonal sockets in their heads. This tool is also referred to as a hex key. They are used to assemble almost everything you buy in a box nowadays, grills, furniture, bicycles, toys, etc..

There are many tools to choose from but this is my recommend list that will get anyone new to home improvement on the right track. Focus on quality tools rather than quantity and buy the best quality tool you can afford.

The bathroom took on a few different forms on Day 1.

From this:

Which is how we left it for them.

To this:

Which was after the removal of sheetrock, toilet, tub, and vanity.

Then this:

Which was the laying of the new subfloor.

And at the end of the day, the front yard looked like this……….

Habitat for Humanity is coming next week for our
tub, toilet, sink, and the infamous shower doors!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
July 27, 2010 ~ Remodel Day 2
We got sheetrock on the walls………..
And an unplumbed tub installed………..
And we resorted to begging people for showers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

July 28, 2010 ~ Remodel Day 3

I was gone all day for a workshop at school. I left before Bob
even arrived, so I was anxious to get home to see the progress.

I was not disappointed.

Not only did the cement board get installed on the floor and
shower wall, there was progress on the sheetrock (patching the
seams) as well as the plumbing for the tub. And as if that wasn’t
enough, I discovered that part of the kitchen wall we needed
work on had been sanded and painted! Bob is a rock star.

Oh. But can I use your shower?

Two things that I have started that I LOVE!http://bathroom-home-improvement.bompus.com/2010/07/two-things-that-i-have-started-that-i-love/ http://bathroom-home-improvement.bompus.com/2010/07/two-things-that-i-have-started-that-i-love/#comments Thu, 29 Jul 2010 14:41:50 +0000 james http://bathroom-home-improvement.bompus.com/2010/07/two-things-that-i-have-started-that-i-love/

1. Bountiful Baskets

I already sent an e-mail out to family, but figured, I could get on a soap box and brag about the co-op that I have participated in.

It is a co-op where you donate $15 and get a basket of fruits and vegetables. They work to get local growers. You make your donation on Monday night (in Utah it’s around 8:00 PM). You sign up for a pick-up time and location. On Saturday you pick up your produce at the determined time and location.

They are in the following states – AZ, CO, UT, WA, WY, NV, ID and TX.

I have paired up with two neighbors. I do the order and we switch off the pick up.

This is why I like it

1) Great quality – I’ve never had better corn on the cob

2) Great price – you get about 15 to 20 pounds of produce for $15

3) Convenience – it takes a little planning, but for the past few weeks my fridge has been STOCKED and I feel like I haven’t been going to costco or the grocery store as much. (therefor saving MORE money because there is less chances for me to buy the latest promotional item!)

You don’t choose what you get, but there is quite a variety, so if you don’t like something (brussels sprouts), don’t worry, you won’t be eating them for every meal!

Check it out!

2. Mint.com

So, I’ve always struggled with managing finances, budgeting, and getting a CLEAR picture of where we are at. I would log into one checking account, get the balance, type that into excel, next account, excel, and so on .. then I’d try and figure out how much I had left after our regular spending each month .. This is just your basic checkbook drill to make sure you will be in the clear when that big check or mortgage hits the checking account.

Budgeting, don’t get me started. I’ve started so many, and failed so many times. “We will spend only $400 on groceries, $50 on gas .. etc .. and look how much money we will SAVE!” The bad thing is that the budget is broken before I can hit ‘SAVE’ to my dumb excel spreadsheet. It was NOT realistic. Where is my fountain diet coke fund? What about home improvement .. ? What about going to DI .. on occasion.

Finances … don’t EVEN get me started. I manage the finances for our family. I know it’s different for every family, but it works for us. It would take me FOREVER, to figure out our NET WORTH ( student loans, mortgage, 401k, assets, savings, etc). I would literally spend hours trying to figure out my sign-on account at the various financial institutions, plug the numbers into excel .. have a small grasp of where we are and our goals, but knowing that this little ‘yearly family statement’ will be obsolete in one month.

Anywho, I just was curious about an old site I had joined (quicken-online). However, mint.com has taken over the current quicken-online accounts. This personal finance tool is AMAZING!! and it’s free!

You aggregate your bank accounts in one spot (no need to log-in more than once).

**Security tip**

Use a VERY strong password for your mint.com account as it is an aggregation of your personal finances .. gold mine for someone attempting to perform Identity theft

Use a different password than the old and trusty password as sometimes sites that you frequent do not encrypt user passwords.

DO NOT use the password ‘password123′ (do I need to explain?)

WHERE DID I SPEND MY MONEY?

They auto-assign the spending categories. It takes some tweaking, but it does a LOT of the work for you. With a click of a button I can see how much I have spent at Salt City Burger in the past 3 months. There are a ton of cool trending and pie charts. See below. BTW, the picture I pulled off the Internet. This is not MY spending. That’s too embarrassing!

WHAT IS MY NET-WORTH?

As I mentioned before, you sync ALL of your bank accounts, this includes the bank that holds your mortgage, your investment firm that manages your 401K, credit cards, savings, checking, etc … You list any assets or liabilities manually for accounts that can’t be added (car, home, other loans). Any time you login, you can see where you are at!

WHAT IS MY BUDGET?

Since you have linked ALL of your bank accounts, it loads the payment history of the last 3 months. When you create a budget, you select a category which you want to budget ..ex. Food-groceries .. the web-app will automatically suggest a number which reflects your spending over the last 3 months. AMAZING!

WHAT CAN I DO WITH ANY EXTRA?

You have set up a realistic budget, you may have some money left over to set aside. They have different tools to help you decide how much you should set aside for a personal finance goal. How much to save for kids tuition? How much to save if we want to retire at 65? How much to save if we want to put in a pool with a tube slide coming from our master bedroom (will really increase our home value!)

Check it out! It’s free!
